Katherine Butler started Urban Reiver's design and illustration services in 2009 after graduating with a BA (Hons) in Fashion Design from Heriot-Watt University. It was there that she was introduced to the exciting world of illustration and graphic design, as well as learning how to make wonderful clothes and knit with her own hand-spun wool. It interested Katherine so much that she found herself a work placement at a great creative design consultancy in Liverpool, Smilingwolf. It was after this she decided that design was what she did best and went on to set up on her own as a freelancer.
After a short struggle to find her first project, Katherine finally secured a contract with a Marketing and Design Agency to design their logo and business stationery. From there she went on to design a book cover and then another, continuing to expand and diversify into different types of graphic work. After working for a while under her own name, the decision was made to re-name the business as "Urban Reiver". It represents all that is dynamic and modern, but celebrates the traditional and nostalgic nature of Scotland, the place where Katherine found her inspiration.
